Dear Parents/Guardians:
Madison Public Schools recognize that when children come to school, they are there to learn. However, since different events in a child's life can affect the learning process, we also recognize that each child may have unique needs which need to be addressed. As a counselor, I have conducted a lot of research in order to develop the best possible program for our students. My experience with small group and individual counseling supports what the research shows; children are affected by events around them. They may not talk about them, or even be totally aware of what they are thinking and feeling. Our goal is not to discuss private, family situations. The groups are centered around giving the child information about various topics in the form of videos, games, and books. If something comes up about a situation at home, the group members are reminded that information shared in the group is confidential. I try very hard to let students have the opportunity to come to me and share concerns that they might have more privately if they have the need. Most students who have participated in small group have left feeling that they understand themselves and their situations better. If any parent would like to visit with me personally about small group or individual counseling, please feel free to contact me.
It is the policy of the school that any student who is in small group or individual counseling (other than for an emergency situation) has parent permission. Even if your student is not currently planning on participating, permission can be given now so that if something does come up they are able to access the services.
At the beginning of the year the students are told about the groups that are offered. Grades 4-6 are given a form as I describe the groups. They are told they can sign up for none, one or more than one. Each student is allowed to indicate which groups they are interested in. In grade 3, I describe the groups, and then since it is new, and they may not understand, I visit with each individually to see if they are interested in a group. After these explanations, a permit for parents to sign is sent home with the child. Parents may then sign the permit form. Once the forms are returned, students who have permission start the groups. Students do not miss any class time when they participate in small group sessions.
Parents are also allowed to sign their child up for a group. If your student did not sign up for a group, but you would like to see them in a group, you are welcome to indicate that. It is best if the child wants to be in the group; therefore, either you or I can visit with them to see if they would be interested in the group.
You may use the attached form to indicate your decisions on small group and individual counseling. Even if they are not going to be in the group, please return the form. I would appreciate having them back by the end of the week.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Sheralee Boe, Counselor
