Course Outline

"Poetry is an echo,
asking a shadow
to dance."
---Carl Sandburg.

This course for high school juniors emphasizes American literature and several of its major literary periods. We begin with several Native American myths, tales, and legends, followed by a brief overview of Puritan thought and a sampling of several pieces from the era. Next is the reading of several short stories and poems from the Romantic era; authors include Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe. One 20th century novel, The Great Gatsby or The Grapes of Wrath, is also studied.

Students can expect to continue honing their writing abilities, with a major focus on persuasive writing. Research projects will also provide the class with opportunities to develop computer and research skills.

Throughout the semester, students will also be learning new vocabulary and reviewing/applying grammar.
