                         NORFOLK   MIDDLE   SCHOOL
"What do you want to do?"
DO MATH...and you can do anything!

Dear Seventh Graders,                                                                                August 2006

WELCOME TO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL!  I hope you are as excited as I to begin a new school year.  This is a fabulous place to make new friends while learning.

I will probably do some things differently than what or how they were done at your elementary school, but my goal is to help you experience new ways of understanding math, learn how math is used outside the classroom, discover that even if there may be some parts that are difficult for you, math can be FUN and will lead to greater career opportunities.

I recommend that you have a spiral notebook (a 5 subject one will probably last the whole year), loose-leaf notebook paper, and pencils or erasable pens.    You are not required to have a calculator.  Should you bring one of your own, please be certain your name is on it.  We use our books almost every day.  You will be expected to cover them immediately and fines will be given for excessive damage

You will be taking notes and doing much of your work in the notebook.  In order to try to meet various learning styles we will have activities that are done individually, in pairs, in small groups, and with the entire class.

Grading will be based on a point system with points given by completing an assignment and points earned for selected homework questions - usually 5 points per assignmentNo points will be given for daily homework not brought to class on time or not completed on time unless there has been an excused absence.  The assignment will have to be completed by the end of the day or you will have to report after school and remain until the assignment is completed.  Periodic 5-minute review quizzes will also be given which will be worth more points.

You may find the unit tests much different as they will involve more writing than you may be used to and higher thinking skills will be required rather than just recall.  The tests will be worth 100 points each.  Should you not pass a test, you will need to see me during your study hall or after school for extra help and make arrangements to complete additional assignments from Accelerated Math - a computer program.

Bonus points and coupons can be earned throughout the trimester by completing your work on time, answering the problem of the day, and by participating in other optional activities.   No points will be given for completing unrelated reports or worksheets.    Also, you will be given up to 5 bonus points for returning this paper signed by your parent or guardian indicating his/her awareness of the procedure in mathematics.

I am looking forward to the opportunities we have to make this an exciting year in mathematics.  Please feel free to let me know anytime there is a concern.  I am usually available to answer questions after school or at other arranged times.  Remember, you will not be marked late for a sport≠s activity after school if you are getting help from a teacher.  We will write an excused pass for you.

Sincerely,

Marion Hoobler, 7th grade Mathematics Teacher            (Please save for future reference.)
