READING

The students will usually read one story each week. Vocabulary will be introduced by looking up each word in the dictionary and discussing the meaning of each word in the story context. Students are required to take home their reading books and read the story once orally. An adult must sign a reading log that should be returned to school.

Individual reading skills will be targeted with each story. Practice workbook pages are assigned for these skills.

After each story is completed, students will be assigned a writing assignment that will complement the story theme or format.

PHONICS

Phonics is the study of letter sounds and letter combination sounds. Students will usually be assigned daily workbook pages that practice these skills.

SPELLING

A new spelling list will be introduced each week. Students will write sentences of six words or more, do spelling workbook practice pages, and copy list words five times each in preparation for the spelling test on the last day of the school week.

ENGLISH/GRAMMAR

Students will discuss mechanics(format and punctuation) and grammar. Assignments will usually be assigned from the book or worksheets with practice sentences.
