Science
- During the first nine weeks, students will explore how living things differ from non-living things and observe and describe cells by their function and reproduction. They will plant soybean seeds, name products made from soybeans, and discuss the importance of soybean production in Nebraska.
The students will be able to:
- describe the five main characteristics of living things (needs food, grows, moves by itself, reproduces, and made of cells).
- diagram (draw a picture) how cells divide to produce growth.
- describe the main parts of a plant and animal cell and their special uses.
- describe how plants reproduce from ways other than seeds (cuttings, bulbs, tubers, spores).
- describe some main charcteristics fo the protist kingdom, i.e., bacteria, algae, protozoa, and fungi.
Classroom activities
Plant soybeans and record how they grow.
Draw and label diagrams of a cell and how they reproduce.
Observe onion skin cells under a microscope.
Observe the yolk, albumen (egg white) of a chicken egg.
Visit a soybean field.
At home activities
Observe the seeds inside fruits, vegetables, or flowers.
Observe mold growing on food.
Discuss and name fruits and vegetables in the fresh produce department of the grocery store.
Describe the heredity of family characteristics, i.e., hair color, eye color, height, body characteristics.
