Welcome to Madison Middle School!

Language Arts

Language Arts means many things.

Journal writing is a daily activity.  Each student is given a topic to write on and five minutes of time.  The journals are graded twice per quarter and they are an easy grade that will help the student's average.  Journals must be done, complete, and handed in on time.

Spelling means everything about the word. Students need to learn how to read a selection and decide what a word means from the context of the sentence. A student needs to learn how to use the word in sentences themselves. Monday we read a selection with 10 words. We write down the meaning in the way it is used in the selection. Then on line b. we write the sentence using the word in the same part of speech and using the word without s suffix. Friday is test day. Tests will not only test the spelling, but it will test the student's knowledge of the definition and ability to use it in a sentence.

Grammar is called Daily Language Usage.  Each day we will begin with a Please Correct that is written in our journal. We will work on spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and correct usage of words. We will also have worksheets to help with grammar skills that we are not proficient on.

 computerboys:

Writing Writing means composing a selection. This is the most important skill our students need to learn. We will compose a selection using the writing process. All final assignments will be typed at school and stored in the student's file.

books:

Reading We do not spend a great deal of time with reading. We talk about reading for nonfiction and fiction and how it differs.

 pencil:

Notetaking We learn how to read a selection and paraphrase it in our own words.
