Welcome to the Challenge Program!

Mission Statement
We recognize that students vary in the level and direction of their abilities, talents, and interests. We believe that intellectually and creatively gifted students, and students with outstanding talents in specific areas often have different educational needs than their peers. Therefore, Norfolk Public Schools has established a differentiated program for these students. This program provides modifications of the pace, content, and methods of the ordinary school curriculum, as well as, specialized activities intended to meet the developmental needs of gifted and talented youngsters in the specific areas of their abilities.
Goals and Objective of the Program
A. The program will give intellectually gifted talented students the opportunity to move through the curricular sequence at an accelerated pace if this is not contradicted by their social needs.
B. Academically able students will spend more time on higher level thinking assignments and in-depth projects within the curricular areas of study.
C. Direct training in the skills of self-management, evaluation, creative process, performance, and/or leadership will be offered, as well as, skills in problem solving and critical thinking.
D. The program will assist intellectually gifted and talented youngsters with emotional and social needs, academic and career development.
Operational Definition of High-Ability Learner
A high ability learner shall be one who demonstrates high performance capabilities intellectually and creatively, one with outstanding talents in a specific area or gives evidence of high performance capabilities in the classroom and who requires services or activities not ordinarily provided by the school in order to develop those capabilities.
