English I Curriculum
Through our curriculum consortium we have developed the following requirements for the 9th grade language arts students.
Purpose Statement: Students will examine various literary forms. They will identify and define literary terms. Students will demonstrate their independent use of English conventions in the writing of informative and narrative essays.
9.1 Students will apply vocabulary and grammar skills by defining teacher selected words and constructing original sentences in whch they illustrate meaning by using context clues. (12.2.1)
9.2 Students will use speaking skills when presenting either their own or published works. Audience members will use listening skills to devise questions for the presenter. (12.2.5, 12.3.1, 12.3.2)
9.3 Students will produce a narrative essay, incorparating specific literary techniques from the English 1 list: exposition, conflict, resolution, antagonist, protagonist, climax, suspense, and tragedy; and evaluate their writings using the teacher selected model. (12.1.1, 12.1.5, 12.2.1, 12.2.2, 12.2.3, 12.2.4)
9.4 Students will produce an informative essay, incorporating specific literary techniques from the English 1 list and evaluate their writings using the teacher selected model. (12.1.1, 12.2.2, 12.2.3, 12.2.4, 12.2.5)
9.5 Students will create a reserach project in which they use documentation to support a thesis statement. (12.1.1, 12.1.2, 12.1.3, 12.1.6, 12.2.1, 12.2.2, 12.2.3, 12.2.5, 12.3.2)
9.6 Students will produce a character sketch, incorporating specific literary techniques from the English 1 list and evaluate their writings using the teacher selected model. (12.1.1, 12.2.2, 12.2.3, 12.2.4)
9.7 Students will investigate mythology for examples of exposition, conflict, resolution, antagonist, protagonist, climax, suspense, and tragedy. Students will justify their examples. (12.1.3, 12.1.5, 12.2.4)
9.8 Students will examine science fiction for literary elements and rate the believability of the story's plot. (12.1.3, 12.1.5, 12.1.8, 12.2.4)
9.9 Students will differentiate between autobiography and biography and the elements contained in each. (12.1.3, 12.1.5, 12.1.6)
9.10 Students will analyze sentences to identify and practice the English 1 grammar requirements needed for presentations and writings throughout the year. (12.2.1)
